You choose whether your profile is visible. Your contact details, private conversations and reports have different access rules.
What you choose to share
Your account can include a display name, email, photos, introduction, housing budget, preferred locations and answers about shared living. Firebase Authentication manages email/password or Google sign-in. The account setup asks you to confirm that you are at least 18.
New profiles start private. When you choose public visibility and complete email confirmation and the required profile details, other people can see a limited profile. Your email, legal consent records and private account fields are not part of that public profile. Pausing your search hides it from discovery.
Edit your profile or visibility. People may have already seen or copied material you previously made public.
Rooms and housing searches
A published room shows the description, photos, area, rent, availability and household information provided by its lister. Exact addresses, coordinates and private owner records are excluded from public room details. Drafts remain with their owner.
Saved people, rooms and named searches are private to your account. Shared group shortlists are visible to eligible members of that group.
Maps and approximate areas
New map areas use a 300-metre radius. We round the location before saving it. Older areas keep their wider circle until the lister chooses a new one. Do not mark your exact entrance.
Maps load only when you choose to load them. OpenStreetMap then receives your IP address and the map tiles you request, which reveal the area you view. RoomieFinder does not send your name, account details or listing text with those requests.
Conversations, groups and reports
Direct chat opens after mutual interest or an accepted introduction. Group invitations must be accepted before membership grants access. Blocks, membership changes, account deletion and moderation can remove access.
If someone reports a message, the private report captures that message and limited earlier context. Human reviewers can inspect that evidence and record an action. The affected person can see the reason for a decision and submit an appeal; the reporter’s identity is not included in that notice.
Reports can therefore retain some message text after it is removed from a conversation or an account is deleted. The retention period and basis for keeping those records are under review for the pilot.
What runs the service
The rebuild uses Google Firebase for authentication, account data, conversations and uploaded files, and Vercel for the web app. Service requests include technical information needed to operate and protect the app, such as request times, network addresses and error details. Rate limits help prevent repeated abusive requests.
Optional public-page analytics uses Vercel only after your browser choice allows it. Account and conversation routes are excluded and search query values are stripped. See cookie and browser-storage choices.
The preview does not process rent or deposits or provide identity-document or phone verification. Optional email notification delivery and any AI report-summary processing require their own verified launch configuration and notice.
Leaving RoomieFinder
Request account deletion after confirming your identity. Starting deletion hides the account and disables access. The status page shows whether cleanup has actually finished.
Cleanup removes your profile, owned rooms and uploads, private saved records and authored message text. Shared chats keep a deletion placeholder and other people’s text. Groups you own are archived; you leave other groups.
Private report evidence and minimal records needed to prevent erased accounts or rooms being recreated are kept separately. Their retention and any infrastructure backup/log retention must be confirmed in the launch policy. The app does not claim that every retained record has been erased.
Your information, your rights
You can correct your profile, pause its visibility, change email choices, decline optional analytics and request account deletion in the app. Depending on the circumstances, data protection law also provides rights to access, portability, restriction and objection, and the right to complain to a supervisory authority.
